There is familiarity in the world that I have crafted for myself, in spite of its confinement and the fact that it is not entirely safe. I learned long ago how to handle the demons from my own past, relinquishing the pieces of me they snatch when I am weak and then fighting to take them back when I am strong. Our relationship was negotiated long ago, but this turning in and out of my life is something new and unwanted. Maybe it is because I have never considered that I might have to own the madness that destroyed my life, our lives, so long ago, that the thinly sliced fragments of this slave girls’ life are too close to a thing that has haunted me before. And so I do what I can to relegate it all to the realm of imagination or, less convincingly, the relentless plague of insomnia. I can not take it seriously, though she aches to be remembered, that much and that alone is etched on the plains of her face, a face that lingers with me long after she is gone. I can not take it seriously because doing so is to acknowledge my mother’s guilelessness, freeing her of the blame that I have never allowed her to escape, the same blame that crushed our relationship into dust and freed me from responsibility, if nothing else. Acknowledging the girl with the watching eyes would mean that I would have to acknowledge the part of myself that is uncontrollable, that unpredictable and unknown piece that I forced out of existence long ago. And that is why I finally notice the stares of the homeless people, because I am avoiding the stare that waits for me so patiently, suspended in mind and time.
